Bharari road sits just above the noise of Shimla, where the pine slopes begin and the town's clatter thins out into birdsong. This ground-floor apartment spreads itself out generously here, three bedrooms and one large open lounge, the sort of place eight people can spill into and settle without anyone feeling short of room.
The lounge is the centre of everything. Six hundred square feet of it, with two deep sofa sets, a large screen, and heaters humming away while the weather does whatever it likes outside. Board games come out after dinner. Somebody puts music on. The younger ones claim the floor and refuse to move.
Each of the three bedrooms carries a king-sized bed, warm British-inspired interiors and a bathroom of its own, and two of them open straight onto balconies where the hills stack up into the distance. Tea tends to happen out there, hands wrapped around a cup, watching the mist lift off the valley in slow drifts.
Meals are handled by the in-house chef, so nobody spends the holiday cooking. Freshly prepared vegetarian food arrives throughout the day, from an early breakfast to a late dinner, with a dining table for gathering everyone into one place. Come evening, a bonfire can be arranged, and cold mountain air plus woodsmoke has a way of keeping people outdoors far longer than they planned.
Being on the ground floor makes life easy with older parents and small children, and a caretaker stays on hand throughout to sort out whatever comes up.
This suits a multi-generational family holiday, a reunion of old friends, or a long winter break where nobody has anywhere to be. The Ridge and Mall Road are minutes away for evening walks and browsing at Lakkar Bazar, Jakhoo Temple sits high above the town, and Kufri and Naldehra open up easy day trips into the higher hills.
